> Macintosh with Internet Explorer or Netscape

Description

There may come a time when you will want to print out the page you are viewing or a portion of it. There are several methods of doing this, depending on what browser, operating system, and computer you are working on, as well as if the page you are viewing uses frames. Frames is when the browser window divides itself up into sections to show different pages at once. You can view this page for more information on how frames works in web browsers.

Materials Needed

Your Macintosh computer and either the Netscape or Internet Explorer Browser.

Check it out!

In order to print a web page from Internet Explorer or Netscape for Macintosh, you must open up the print dialogue box, which contains the options for printing. There are several ways of calling up the print dialogue box.

  • In the toolbar at the top of the browser window, click the print button to call up the print dialogue box.
  • In the menu at the top of the screen, choose [FILE] and click [PRINT]
  • Press Command+P on the keyboard

At the print dialogue box, you can change options such as your printer, the number of copies, etc. When you are ready to print, click the print button at the bottom of the dialogue box.

Printing from Frames

Occasionally, you will want to print from pages that have frames. Frames are divisions on a web page that allow several different pages to be displayed at once, such as a title frame at the top of the screen, or a menu frame on the side of the screen.

To print from a page that has frames, you must first select a frame to make it the active frame. To do this, simply click the mouse anywhere on the frame you want to print. This makes it the active frame. To print, simply use one of the above methods to call up the print dialogue box.

On a Macintosh, there is no way to print the page as laid out on the screen (all frames printed simultaneously).

Printing a Selection

On the Macintosh platform, there is no option for printing selections on a page, such as a sentence or a paragraph. In order to print only a portion of a page, you will need to use a text-editing or word-processing program and cut-and-paste from the web page.

To cut-and-paste a selection from a web-page to an outside text-editor or word-processor

  • Highlight the text you wish to copy by holding the left-mouse button and dragging the cursor over the text.
  • Click on the Edit menu at the top of the screen and choose Copy
  • Open your text editor and Click on the Edit menu. Choose Paste
  • Print the document in the text editor

Scaling a Web Page for Print

Occasionally, you may want to print a page at a smaller size than is displayed on the screen. This is called scaling. Adjusting the scaling may vary from computer to computer, depending on the software that is installed for your printer. If the following instructions do not seem to work on your computer, contact your network administrator, lab attendant, or refer to the documentation on your printer software.

To scale a web page for printing:

  • Click on the [FILE] menu at the top of the screen. Choose [Page Setup].
  • In the box labeled "Scale", type in the percent you would like the page scaled. For example, 50% scale would print the page half the size it would normally print. Click [OK].
  • Print your document as you would normally. Remember that if you would like to print another document at full scale (100%), you must go back and change the Scale under Page Setup.

Try it!

  • Try out the different methods of printing described above.
  • What method is easiest for you and still prints the content you want?
  • Experiment by printing different portions of a page.
